Understanding the Hyosung CDU Architecture
The CDU isn't one system. It's three:

Error Code Categories: Know Your Prefixes
Hyosung uses a prefix system. Mixing them up is the #1 mistake we see in the field:

⚠️ Common mistake: Error 20001 (No Cassette) is a Miscellaneous error, not a CDU error. It does not take the "C" prefix. The CDU equivalent is C004D, which also means "No Cassette" but is reported through the CDU subsystem. Different code, different diagnostic path, same root cause.

Critical CDU Errors: The "Machine's Down" Club
C0030 — CDU Main Motor Failure
- What the machine says: Motor didn't respond
- What it usually means: Timing wheel sensor is dirty, or the plastic timing wheel teeth are cracked. The motor itself is rarely the problem.
- Fix in order:
- ⚠️ Power off before opening CDU covers
- Clean the timing wheel sensor face with isopropyl alcohol — this is a dedicated sensor, not CS1 (reject) or CS2 (counter)
- Inspect timing wheel teeth under bright light — hairline cracks are invisible to the naked eye. Get close
- Check motor connector at CDU board (J3 on most models)
- Replace timing wheel if cracked; replace motor only as last resort
- Parts needed: Timing Wheel Sensor + Timing Wheel + CDU Main Motor — PNs vary by CDU revision, consult your Hyosung SPM
C0034 / C0035 — Double Detect Failure (Feed Module 1 / Feed Module 2)
- What the machine says: Two notes detected when one should exist
- What it usually means: Double-detect sensor is dusty — not failed. 9 times out of 10.
- Fix in order:
- ⚠️ Power off
- Remove cassette, open feed module cover — the double-detect sensor is the optical pair right near the pick roller
- Blow ESD-safe compressed air through the sensor gap; follow with alcohol wipe on transmitter and receiver faces
- Check bill quality — crisp new bills trigger double-detect more often than circulated ones
- Do not attempt field adjustment of double-detect threshold. Factory calibration only.

C0047 / C005B — Cassette Misfeed (Cassette 1 / Cassette 2)
- What the machine says: Note didn't leave cassette
- What it usually means: Pick wheels are worn
- Fix in order:
- Inspect pick wheel rubber surface — shiny = worn, matte = still good
- Check bill quality — sticky or brand-new bills cause misfeeds
- Test with a fresh brick of circulated bills
- Pro tip: Pick wheels have a service life of roughly 200K dispenses. 500+ transactions/day in a high-traffic location? You're replacing them twice a year, minimum.

C0031 / C0032 — Gate Sensor Failed
- Root causes: Gate solenoid stuck or sensor CS3 blocked
- Fix:

- Check CS3 sensor path for debris
- Check solenoid connector at CDU board

Bill Jam & Reject Codes
C0041 — Five or More Dispense Attempts
Not a hardware failure. Shuffle bills in cassette — sticky/static bills cause repeated pick attempts. If persistent, replace pick wheels.
C0043 — Ten or More Bills Rejected
Bill quality issue or double-detect out of calibration. Shuffle bills first. If it persists with multiple bill batches, the double-detect may need factory recalibration. Not field adjustable.
C004A — Bill Jam During Dispense
Check transport path sensors CS12/CS13/CS14. Remove any debris. If jam recurs at the same sensor location, that sensor may be intermittently failing.
C0044 — Five Consecutive Rejects
Clean double-detect sensor. Check bill stack in cassette — fan the bills to reduce static adhesion before reloading.
C0040 — Cassette Removed During Dispense
- What the machine says: Cassette was pulled mid-transaction
- What it usually means: The retaining clip is worn or the cassette wasn't fully latched. Someone loaded cash and the cassette didn't seat properly.
- Fix in order:
- Check the retaining clip — if it feels loose, bend it slightly inward
- Reseat the cassette firmly until you hear the latch click
- If the clip is broken, replace it — don't jump to replacing the CDU board
- Part: Cassette Retaining Clip — consult Hyosung SPM by model
Note: C0040 is different from C004D (No Cassette). C0040 means the cassette was detected at boot but removed during a transaction. C004D means the CDU never detected a cassette at all. Different code, different diagnostic path.
C004C — More Notes at Exit Than Picked
The official corrective action says "Check and clean CS13." This is the CDU exit sensor — if it's miscounting, the machine thinks more notes left than were actually picked. Clean CS13, check bill quality.
C00D0 — Bill Jam: Note Didn't Reach CS13
The note passed CS12 but never arrived at CS13 (CDU exit). This means the note is stuck somewhere in the transport path between mid-transport and exit. Open the CDU, check the transport belt, and look for folded or jammed bills in the exit area.

20001 vs C004D: Both Mean "No Cassette" — What's the Difference?
This trips up a lot of techs:

Mechanical vs Electrical: The Decision Tree
When a Hyosung CDU throws an error, use this checklist before ordering parts:
